NEW YORK metropolitan area
The vast metropolitan area includes New York City and the rest of
Downstate New York (Long Island and the mid and lower Hudson Valley),
northern and central New Jersey (including its eleven largest
municipalities), and western Connecticut (including four of its seven
largest cities). The phrase Tri-State area is usually used to refer to New
York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. The New York metropolitan area is the
most populous metropolitan statistical area in the United States with 20.1
million residents, or slightly over 6% of the nation's total population,
as of 2020
